DESIGN ANTHOLOGY - LAP OF LUXURY

Since the concept of having a small living space in Australia is an uncommon one, Macarounas ensured that the home would be clutter-free with a carefully planned layout and ingenious concealed storage spaces throughout. Design touches such as a smoked mirror grants the illusion of space. The end result is a compact yet comfortable base for when the couple is home in Sydney — a far cry from the penthouses beginnings.

A Miami-inspired Art Deco home in Coogee
For Michelle, bringing the outdoors in was a priority in designing this beach home.

Interior designer Michelle Macarounas coaxed this dilapidated Art Deco property back to a modern design.
An ever-evolving aesthetic and a passion for modernism informed the way Michelle Macarounas of Infinite.Design decorated her own home.
WHAT FIRST APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT THE HOME?
It was Miami in Coogee! This dilapidated art deco house with grand potential sat high on a hill looking onto a row of palm trees guiding you to the sea. My head was swimming with possibilities.
The street entrance facade faces the ocean.
HOW DID YOU RESOLVE ITS CHALLENGES?
It was dark with poky rooms and the staircase to the upper level soaked up the marvellous view. Clever work with the engineers opened it to take full advantage of that gorgeous ocean frontage.
Brokis ‘Muffin’ table lights by Lucie Koldova and Dan Yeffet fromSpence & Lyda. Andreu World ‘Reverse’ dining table from Ke-Zu.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE COMPLETED PROJECT?
We worked to introduce an elegant contemporary look. Bringing deco properties back to a modern design can be tricky. We didn’t want to ignore the style but not emphasise it either.
Bernhardt Design ‘Oslo’ chairs from Ke-Zu. Artwork by Michelle Macarounas. Framed artwork by unknown artist. Custom joinery byInfinite.Design.
HOW DID YOU MAXIMISE THE SPACE?
A central pod runs like a spine from the rear to the front separating living and bedrooms as an elegant joinery design that morphs from a kitchen/laundry to library to study and dining unit and then to a walk-in robe for the main bedroom.
Bedlinen from Ondene and Missoni Home. Artwork by unknown artist bought at auction.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT LIVING HERE?
It’s versatile and can change in minutes from a family home to our design studio and, best, to a roaring entertaining area.
Bathroom floors and walls are tiled in Indian limestone.
